Many seniors are unaware that they can save money on their groceries. When you check out, simply ask for the senior citizen discount on your grocery bill. Some stores don’t even require you to ask for the discount. Sometimes, your birthday is attached to the store card the cashier scans before your order.
Here are some examples of grocery discounts:
- Hy-Vee – 5% discount on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
- Farm Fresh – 5% discount Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Piggly Wiggly – depends on location
- New Seasons Market – 10% every Wednesday
- Fred Meyer – 10% on the first Tuesday of the month
- Compare Food Supermarket – 10% at participating locations

Mortgage
In some cases, there are discounts for people over 60 on mortgage payments. The good news is that once you qualify, you’re set until your home is paid off. Other clothing and houseware stores you can save money at include Dress Barn, Stein Mart and Goodwill. Goodwill offers senior discounts ranging between 10 and 20%. Stein Mart offers an additional 20% discount on clearance items on the first Monday of each month. Finally, Dress Barn offers a 10% discount every Tuesday and Wednesday for people 62 or older.
You can also enjoy “Seniors Day” at Walgreens once a month. Discounts vary by location. However, if you’re a Rewards cardmember, you can enjoy 20% off. Online, you can save 10%.
